Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Licensing

SQL Server is available under three different licensing models: per processor, per server plus user CALs, and per server plus device CALs.

Processor Licensing Model: A license is required for each physical or virtual processor accessed by an operating system environment running SQL Server. This license does not require any device or user client access licenses (CALs).

Server Plus User CALs Licensing Model: Server plus user client access license (CAL) licensing requires a separate Server license for each server on which the software is installed, plus a user CAL for each user accessing the server.

Server Plus Device CALs Licensing Model: Server plus device client access license (CAL) licensing requires a separate Server license (for either SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition) for each server on which the software is installed, plus a CAL for each client device.

Dual-core processors on the same chip are treated like a single processor for licensing purposes.

Standard Edition

Retail processor pricing: $5,999

Retail server plus CAL pricing: $1,849 with 5 CALs

Enterprise Edition

Retail processor pricing: $24,999

Retail server plus CAL pricing: $13,969 with 25 CALs
